In 1967, Howard Hughes bought the hotel for $3 million as part of a buying spree on many Las Vegas properties. In 1962, the hotel became the Polynesian-themed Castaways Hotel and Casino. It was later replaced with the Sans Souci Hotel 1950s. First occupying the Mirage was a tiny motel that went from the 1930s to the 1950s.
